What exactly are these parenting skills and how they can help you
Parenting skills... What on earth are these? Well it depends very much on who you ask. If you ask a psychologist he will tell you that parenting skills are about managing the kid's behavioral patterns and adapting your own behavior to insure a harmonious development for your child. Hmm... This doesn't sound exactly helpful now does it? If you ask your grandma she will answer: "Just put some sense in your kid". Now we have a starting place.
Parenting skills are a strange mix of common sense and role playing. The best parents are those who know how to play. If you keep throwing speeches at your kid, he or she will very soon get sick of them. If you play with them though, they will never get bored. If you manage to push some educational value to the game, than you don't need to read this article.
I said something about common sense. I mean think about it. Kids must be treated like... kids. This simple truth is forgotten too often. Kids need a balanced life. Another forgotten truth. Balance is not just about cutting some time for education, but also the other way around. There are gifted children out there, but even they must play every once in a while.
The most important of the parenting skills is to be able to ensure your kid a proper childhood. Spend time with them, play with them, give them their space, allow them to enjoy their life, make sure that they evolve on the right path. Sounds simple now doesn't it? Every parent will raise an eyebrow just about now. Being a parent is anything but simple.
Parenting skills can't be taught. Or do they? Nobody teaches you how to be a good parent. The first child always comes as a shock, a shock from which most parents never recover. You must learn the parenting skills and believe there are people out there willing to help. Parenting skills training courses are a rather new field, but already they have proved to be highly effective. Is such a course the right one for you? Probably yes. Or of course you could let your mother take care of the kids, grandmas are always supposed to have more experience.
Bottom line is that parenting skills are a very complex issue where nobody has all the answers and where every answer given raises even more questions. There is no science only some empirical rules which sometime are useful. But of course this is something you must learn on your own.
